Coalition Stops Spokane City Council Initiative to Impose Apprenticeship Quotas

In August, members of the Spokane City Council previewed a new local ordinance that would impose a 15% apprenticeship quota on Spokane public works projects over $200,000 – a local law that would have the consequence of higher construction costs for Spokane taxpayers, while do essentially nothing for apprenticeship. The draft ordinance was put forth with input only from the unions, and no input from contractors.

ABC and AGC formed a coalition to stop the ordinance, and after two weeks of communications with the Council was successful in stopping the ordinance, at least for now. We will remain vigilant however, anticipating the ordinance will be back next year. We will also be taking the time to education council members about the pitfalls of imposing these types of quotas.
