ABC will be presenting “Workers’ Comp Insurance ….It is a Controllable Expense! “ in Northern Idaho

This seminar will be presented in three separate parts. Greg Rodriguez, Vice President of Member and Safety Services will cover safety in the workplace and accident prevention.  When accidents occur in the work place, work stops!  When work stops, it costs productivity and money.  If the accident results in an injury, now we have an injury claim that directly impacts the cost of Workers’ Comp Insurance Rates.   By avoiding accidents and injuries in the workplace, companies save money!

Mayor Condon’s Actions on Apprenticeship Ordinance Disappointing – Editorial Comment by ABC President Kate McCaslin

After the Spokane City Council passed a new apprenticeship quota ordinance several weeks ago by a vote of 5 to 2, the coalition opposing the ordinance, (led by ABC and AGC), was hopeful that Mayor Condon would veto the ordinance.  While his veto most certainly would have been over-ridden by the extremely liberal City Council majority, his veto message could have reinforced the fact that this burdensome new regulation would do nothing for training and apprenticeship, but would most certainly have raised the cost of construction for City taxpayers.

Safety Fest of the Great Northwest – Post Falls

Safety Fest of the Great Northwest – Post Falls is fast approaching. This year the event will be held from February 18th – 20th at the North Idaho College – Workforce Training Center. Washington Minimum Wage Increased to $9.47 per hour effective January 1, 2015

Tumwater – Washington's new, higher minimum wage takes effect Jan. 1, 2015. The 15-cent increase to $9.47 was announced by the Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) in September. The change reflects a 1.59 percent increase in the federal Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) over the last 12 months ending Aug. 31.

ABC and AGC Fight Against New City of Spokane Apprenticeship Utilization Law Ends Unsuccessfully

ABC and AGC members and staff teamed up over the last two weeks to fight a new local law requiring 15% apprenticeship utilization on any City of Spokane Project over $350,000.Sadly, despite our efforts the Spokane City Council approved the new regulation, 5 to 2.  Mike Allen joined with Mike Fagan to oppose the rule, with Council members Stratton, Snyder, Waldref, Mumm and Stuckart supporting the rule.

National Regulatory Alert – Important! NLRB Issues “Ambush Elections Rule” -- Dangerous Implications for Employers

On December 12, 2014, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) issued a controversial final rule overhauling its procedures for union representation elections, commonly known as the “ambush” elections rule. The changes are currently scheduled to take effect on April 14, 2015, unless a court or Congress blocks enforcement of the new rule.

OSHA 300/300A Logs for 2014 need to be completed and posted by February 1, 2015.

In 2010,  Federal  OSHA audited Washington State’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and determined that DOSH Compliance Officers are under citing employers.  One of the focus areas for citations is OSHA Logs.   To assist you with completing your OSHA 300 Log,  ABC has scheduled training for our members.
