On Monday, March 28, 2016, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a final rule that would drastically lower the permissible exposure limit (PEL) of respirable crystalline silica for the construction industry. The changes are scheduled to take effect on June 23, 2016. Construction employers must comply with the requirements of the standard by June 23, 2017, except for requirements for laboratory evaluation of exposure samples, which begin on June 23, 2018.
