Last week hundreds of ABC members, apprentices, and staff gathered in Ft. Lauderdale Florida for 3 days of learning and competition at the ABC National Workforce Development Conference and Craft Championship (NCC).

Featuring scores of workshops and training for supervisors, managers, owners and ABC staff, the National Workforce Development Conference provided three days of opportunities to learn and share information from fellow ABC members and staff from throughout the country.

At the same time, over 187 ABC apprentices/trainees competed in the ABC National Craft Championships.  During this Olympic style two-day event, young men and women compete in one of 13 competitions, representing 11 crafts.   Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals are given for each of the 11 crafts.  A safety award is also provided for each of the 11 crafts.

Holley Thomas, ABC Greater Houston Chapter, won the Craft Professional of the Year award.  Tradesman International donated a 2015 Dodge truck to the first place winner.   Jonathan Sacks, ABC Maine Chapter, won the Craft Instructor of the Year award.  The National Center for Construction Education and Researched donated $10,000 to the first place winner.

ABC knows the future of the industry relies on its ability to attract and retain the most talented individuals necessary to meet the nation’s ever-increasing construction needs. ABC is leading the way in developing the merit shop construction industry workforce by offering programs, such as the NCC, that promote life-long learning experience and national recognition based on achievement at every career level.
